JULY ARTIST

Kat Cappillino
Reception Friday · August 13 · 6-8pm
Exhibit 10am-5pm from July 17 through August 18

Before converting to art, Kat Cappillino was a scientist. She spent years studying microbiology and ecology, working in a behavioral evolution laboratory and researching biodiversity in wetlands. Her background in biology strongly influences her work's content. She is especially attracted to the microcosmos and organisms that challenge our notion of reality. Her current work explores themes of invasive species and human control over the natural world. She uses mixed media collage, ink, gouache, watercolor, and acrylic on paper to create layered, interacting environments, mimicking the complexity and fragility of our ecosystems.

This show will be an expression of invasive species in the form of an installation of wall mounted paper sculptures and small mixed media paintings and drawings on panel. Cappillino has shown locally in New Paltz, in NYC, Kingston and in Albany.

JULY 17TH: 4-7PM
Unison's 4th Annual Water Street Market Sculpture Walk

Unison Arts Center in conjunction with Water Street Market and Art Along the Hudson's 3rd Saturday Art Loop will be holding a reception at Water Street Market on Saturday, July 17 from 4-7pm, to celebrate the official opening of Unison's 4th Annual Water Street Market Sculpture Walk.  This year's Sculpture Walk features the work of the following artists: Jay Bedient, Steve Fabrico, Michael Ciccone, William Scholl, Michael Poast, John Cino, David Skora and Chris Curnan. The exhibition was curated by Unison's gallery committee and features many of the artists that are also exhibiting at Unison's Sculpture Garden at their Mountain Rest Road site.

Also at exhibiting at Unison's Gallery at Water Street Market is an installation of wall mounted paper sculptures and small mixed media paintings and drawings on panel by Kat Cappillino.   Water Street Market will have a special outdoor showing of works by various community artists that also will be happening during this same time period.

JUNE THROUGH AUGUST

WATER STREET MARKET SUMMER SERIES

We are heading into our third season of Water Street Market's summer series. One of our goals here at Water Street Market is to hold events which support sustainability, while providing thought provoking ideas and creating a cohesive community. We strive to support locally owned businesses and the environment, while fostering community and acting as a catalyst to local charities. Our courtyard setting has often been compared to an Italian piazza, a place where locals come to co-mingle, eat, celebrate and collaborate. Throughout the summer we make this happen each week at our free weekly events.

POTLUCKS WITH A PURPOSE

SUNDAYS; JUNE 27TH, JULY 28TH & AUGUST 29TH
5 TO 7PM

Join us the last Sundays of the month at the Water Street Market courtyard, for "Potlucks with a Purpose". This monthly event is a time to come together with fellow community enthusiasts and participants to enjoy delicious local, organic food, meet new people, and find out about what is happening in our community.

If you have ideas and notions on how to make New Paltz a more desirable and cohesive community, this informal gathering is the place to discuss your thoughts and ideas. Many of us sit on boards and do volunteer work without ever sitting down together to collaborate, only to find out later we had been working toward the same goals.
Bring friends and family, a musical instrument, games to play, and a dish to share! Our preference is for local and organic vegetarian foods, but all contributions are welcome. Please bring a description of your dish as well as your own cup, bowl, plate, and utensils. We will be composting and recycling everything at this zero-waste event!

And if you are making a big change in your life or have an initiative that you would like to share, there will be a time for announcements during the potluck. You can ask for help and invite others to join you in conversation around a topic of your choice.

B.R.A.W.L.
(Broads Regional Arm Wrestling League)
FUNDRAISER for COTA

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8TH
7PM

COTA (CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS) KICK-OFF AND FUNDRAISER BENEFITING A CHARITY TO BE ANNOUNCED...

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO CAME AND SUPPORTED COTA AND FOR THE DONATIONS OF $800. WATER STREET MARKET IS ADDING ANOTHER $200 TO MAKE IT AND EVEN $1,000. THIS EVENT WAS ONE OF OUR BIGGEST AND MOST ENERGETIC YET. LOOK FOR THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN NEXT SPRING!!

At B.R.A.W.L. events, arm wrestlers like Jackie-O-Nasty, Ms. ARMerica, Nurse Hatchet, and Queen Victorious duke it out on a regulation arm wrestling table.
The competition is fierce and filled with sweat, groans and foul play.
Each woman brings her own posse to back her up.
Broads Regional Arm Wrestling League is where Hudson Valley ladies walk the line between pro wrestling antics, theatrics, and pure strength competitive sport.  Eight women wrestlers, each with their own character theme and wrestling moniker, compete in each B.R.A.W.L. competition.  They have money-hungry entourages who collect "bets" from the crowd.
Rules are determined and managed by the referee, and manipulated and corrupted by the wrestlers, celebrity judges, crowd hecklers, and muscle lovin' bet-hedgers.
This is beyond sport.
This is beyond entertainment.
This is brute strength on stage.

Place your bets on the broad of your choice, then watch your cash go towards local organizations whose services benefit women and girls.  Thus far, our donations have gone to Family of Woodstock's Battered Women's Services, the YWCA, and Ulster Co. Teen Parent Services.

NO COVER CHARGE.
But please bring money for "betting" on the wrestlers of your dreams.

If you are interested in being an arm wrestler, contact hudsonvalleybrawl@gmail.com for more info.

When Johnny Jackson dared you to arm wrestle him in third grade, did you break his thumb?  Does the occupation slot on your job resume read "Engineer of the Universe?"  Do you find yourself on a bi-weekly basis feeling too big for, not only your own britches, but the britches of those around you?  'Tis the season to be brawlin'!!
WRISTS UP! SEE YOU THERE!

THIRD ANNUAL HOLIDAY, COAT DRIVE, FUNDRAISER AND TREE LIGHTING

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4TH
11AM

In the spirit of giving Water Street Market will be hosted a holiday fundraiser, coat drive, auction. Water Street Market donated $2 per Santa photo to St. Joseph's food pantry. Over 100 coats, hats, scarves, etc were donated to Family of New Paltz. Despite the cold, several families with their pets and children came out to sit with Santa and donate their winter apparel to families in need. Over 100 photos taken we were able to donate $375.

Throughout the event people had the opportunity to make a silent bid on a beautiful live tree. A $100 bid was one and Mike Nielson of Arcady Farms will be delivering and planting the tree for the winner of the auction after the holidays. Proceeds from the auction were donated to Family of New Paltz.

Kids helped decorate our eco-friendly live tree by making a sustainable ornament at our art project corner sponsored by New Paltz GreenWorks and The Hudson Valley Materials Exchange.

2011 EVENTS AT WATER STREET MARKET

JANUARY

3RD ANNUAL LOCAL INGREDIENT
CHILI CHALLENGE

DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

This year's second annual local ingredient chili challenge was another tremendous success.

On behalf of Water Street Market I would like to thank all of the participants, volunteers, judges and tasters who helped make this event possible.. Water Street Market challenged local restaurants, caterers and home cooks to make three gallons of their best chili using at least three local ingredients. Twelve participants, including Thomas Ingolia of P&G's (1st place best professional and 1st for People"s Choice), Luke Roberti of 36 Main, Gadelettos Seafood, Lauren Tomaz (2nd place vegetarian), Matt Flusser (best vegetarian), The Blythe family (first place best chili and second people's choice), Ryan McClintoch and Paul Schembri (2nd place best chili), Ann Marie Ogle, Barnstorm Bbq, Gordon Fire Equipment and The Youth Center, put forth their best culinary efforts. Many used up to ten local ingredients including Gilded Otter beer, Whitecliff wine, Veritas and Kiernan Farm Beef, local honey, peppers, tomatoes, venison, etc.

Joan Fall of The Bistro Mountain Store, Adam Sternberg of 36 Main and Kat Alexander of The Cheese Plate had a hard time choosing, tasting some of the chili up to 4 times to make their final decisions.
The purpose of this event was to encourage sustainable practices such as asking people to seek out and utilize local ingredients even in the dead of winter
Most importantly we'd like to thank the community for coming out and participating on such a bitter cold afternoon. A true sense of community and good natured competition could be felt throughout the day. A total of $1,000 was raised for The St. Joseph food pantry which is in desperate need of help. Their non-denominational food pantry feeds thousands of families in our area.

Look to this website in November for the 2011 date for the next chili challenge and information how to get involved.
